The Mavericks are 19-35 and pivoting towards a rebuild, so this news is not a big surprise. By waiting until the 2026-27 season to return from his torn ACL, Irving will be able to take his time with his rehab to ensure that he returns at full strength. Irving is under contract for one more season with a $42.42 million player option for 2027-28.
Gafford will miss the front end of this back-to-back due to a right shoulder impingement, and the big man faces a short turnaround if he hopes to play in Phoenix on Wednesday. Marvin Bagley is expected to start in Gafford's stead, while Dwight Powell will likely handle backup center duties.
Washington was a late addition to the injury report Tuesday and will be held out of the front end of this back-to-back set due to left elbow soreness. He faces a short turnaround if he hopes to suit up Wednesday in Phoenix. With Washington out, Klay Thompson and Khris Middleton are candidates to see increased playing time, while Tyler Smith could enter the rotation.
Martin hasn't played since March 15, but he was listed as doubtful for Tuesday's game, which can be considered a sign of progress. His next chance to play will come Wednesday in Phoenix.
Lively sought out multiple opinions on his right foot, but it was ultimately determined that season-ending surgery was the best course of action for the third-year center, and he's expected to make a full recovery ahead of the 2026-27 season. Daniel Gafford and Dwight Powell will continue to serve as the main big men for Dallas behind Anthony Davis in Lively's absence.
With Williams unavailable, Ryan Nembhard and AJ Johnson will have a chance to get back into the rotation. For now, Williams should be considered questionable for Wednesday's game in Phoenix.
