Morant underwent imaging on his left elbow Wednesday, which revealed "incomplete healing" of the sprained UCL that he sustained in mid-January. The new timeline means that Morant will be out of action until at least mid-March, so Ty Jerome (calf) and Scotty Pippen (toe) should both continue to operate in elevated roles for as long as Morant is sidelined.
Caldwell-Pope is expected to make a full recovery ahead of next season and holds a $21.6 million player option for 2026-27. He'll finish this season with averages of 8.4 points, 2.7 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 21.3 minutes per contest across 51 regular-season games (14 starts). Cam Spencer, Walter Clayton (calf) and Jahmai Mashack are candidates to see an uptick in minutes due to Caldwell-Pope being sidelined for the rest of the campaign.
Aldama will miss a 17th straight game and remains without a timetable to return. His next chance to play comes Monday against Chicago.
Out
B. Clarke
Clarke has been sidelined since Dec. 20 with a Grade 2 right calf strain, an injury he sustained in just his second game back from offseason knee surgery. While the veteran forward was initially given a 4-to-6-week recovery timeline in mid-January, his return has been delayed as he works through the reconditioning process. This latest update suggests Clarke is unlikely to return before mid-March, potentially leaving him with only a handful of regular-season games to ramp up his workload. With Clarke still out and Zach Edey (ankle) also sidelined, the Grizzlies will continue to rely on Santi Aldama and GG Jackson to handle the bulk of the frontcourt minutes.
Memphis announced Sunday that Edey would require surgery, but he wasn't officially ruled out for the rest of the season until after going under the knife Tuesday. The club expects the big man to make a full recovery ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
This will be the third straight game on the inactive list for Clayton, and for now, he should be considered questionable for Monday's game in Chicago. Cam Spencer should see quality minutes Friday night with Memphis' backcourt extremely banged up.
Pippen was without a return timetable after initially being diagnosed with the injury, which was likely related to the surgery that caused him to miss the beginning of the campaign. The Grizzlies have no incentive to rush him back, so this move isn't surprising. It's unclear what Pippen's offseason will look like, but he should be back to full strength by training camp next season. He'll finish his third campaign in Memphis with averages of 11.4 points, 4.7 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals across 10 appearances (six starts).
Joining Rupert in the starting lineup for Thursday's game will be Javon Small, Jaylen Wells, GG Jackson and Olivier-Maxence Prosper. In Rupert's previous start this season, he finished with five points (2-6 FG, 1-3 3 Pt, 0-2 FT), five rebounds, two steals and one turnover in 32 minutes.
With Jackson unavailable, Taylor Hendricks will have a chance to start and earn major minutes, making him an attractive target in daily fantasy leagues. For now, Jackson should be considered questionable for Monday's game in Chicago.
Wells will miss his second game of the season and his first since Feb. 7 due to a right shoulder contusion. His next opportunity to play will come Monday in Chicago. In the second-year swingman's stead, Cam Spencer, Jahmai Mashack and Tyler Burton are candidates to see increased minutes.
