Embiid reported soreness on his right side following the 76ers' win over the Heat on Thursday, and further tests have revealed that the former MVP is dealing with an oblique strain. The injury is severe enough to sideline Embiid for at least the next three games, which makes March 7 against the Hawks his next first opportunity to return. In Embiid's absence, Andre Drummond should serve as the Sixers' starting center while Adem Bona elevates to backup duties.
The suspension will start with Saturday's game against the Pelicans and will keep George off the floor until late March. In his absence, Dominick Barlow figures to be the top candidate to enter the 76ers' starting lineup, and Kelly Oubre should also take on an expanded role for Philadelphia.
Edgecombe suffered a lumbar contusion Tuesday against the Spurs, and it sounds like he will be listed as day-to-day going forward. The rookie will be re-evaluated ahead of Saturday's game versus Atlanta. In the meantime, the 76ers could lean more on Quentim Grimes and Cameron Payne.
Oubre is now set to miss both halves of Philadelphia's back-to-back set. Trendon Watford, Justin Edwards and Jabari Walker are all candidates to join the starting lineup Wednesday, as VJ Edgecombe (back) is joining Oubre in street clothes.
Out
J. Broome
The procedure was performed by Dr. Riley Williams at HSS in New York, and the 76ers announced that Broome will be re-evaluated in four weeks. While the team previously noted that surgery could potentially end the rookie's season, a meniscectomy typically carries a shorter recovery timeline of 4-to-6 weeks compared to a full repair. Broome sustained the injury on Feb. 21 while playing for the G League's Delaware Blue Coats. The second-round pick out of Auburn has appeared in just 11 games for Philadelphia this season, averaging 0.9 points and 1.5 rebounds in 5.0 minutes per contest.
