The Mavericks are 19-35 and pivoting towards a rebuild, so this news is not a big surprise. By waiting until the 2026-27 season to return from his torn ACL, Irving will be able to take his time with his rehab to ensure that he returns at full strength. Irving is under contract for one more season with a $42.42 million player option for 2027-28.
Washington will miss a third straight outing due to a left ankle sprain, and his next opportunity to play will come Tuesday in Charlotte. With the 27-year-old forward being joined by Cooper Flagg (foot) and Naji Marshall (finger) on the sidelines, Caleb Martin, Klay Thompson and Khris Middleton are candidates for increased playing time.
Flagg's absence due to a left foot sprain will extend to seven games Sunday, and he should be considered doubtful for Tuesday's contest against the Hornets. Naji Marshall (finger), Caleb Martin (back) and Brandon Williams should all continue to see extended playing time for as long as Flagg is sidelined.
Marshall will miss Sunday's contest due to a right finger contusion, presumably suffered during Friday's loss to the Grizzlies. Brandon Williams, Klay Thompson and Khris Middleton figure to see extra minutes with Marshall out.
Lively sought out multiple opinions on his right foot, but it was ultimately determined that season-ending surgery was the best course of action for the third-year center, and he's expected to make a full recovery ahead of the 2026-27 season. Daniel Gafford and Dwight Powell will continue to serve as the main big men for Dallas behind Anthony Davis in Lively's absence.
Bagley will miss a second consecutive contest due to a neck sprain, and his next opportunity to suit up will come Tuesday against the Hornets. With the big man sidelined, Dwight Powell will likely operate as Daniel Gafford's primary backup.
