The Mavericks are 19-35 and pivoting towards a rebuild, so this news is not a big surprise. By waiting until the 2026-27 season to return from his torn ACL, Irving will be able to take his time with his rehab to ensure that he returns at full strength. Irving is under contract for one more season with a $42.42 million player option for 2027-28.
Thompson will get the night off in the second leg of this back-to-back set, and his next opportunity to play will come Sunday against the Thunder. With the veteran forward being joined by Cooper Flagg (foot), P.J. Washington (ankle) and Caleb Martin (back) on the sidelines, Khris Middleton, Max Christie, AJ Johnson and Brandon Williams are candidates for increased playing time.
Washington was initially tagged as questionable for Friday's contest due to a left ankle sprain that he sustained in Tuesday's win over the Grizzlies. The veteran forward will indeed be sidelined for both games of the Mavericks' back-to-back set, and his next chance to play is Sunday against the Thunder. Khris Middleton will continue to operate in an expanded role in Washington's absence.
Flagg will be sidelined for a sixth straight game and remains without a timetable to return. He can be considered questionable at best for Sunday's game against the Thunder.
Martin's next chance to play now comes Sunday, when the Mavericks face the defending-champion Thunder. Dallas is decimated by injuries Friday, which positions Khris Middleton, Brandon Williams and Max Christie as worthwhile streaming options in most fantasy formats.
Lively sought out multiple opinions on his right foot, but it was ultimately determined that season-ending surgery was the best course of action for the third-year center, and he's expected to make a full recovery ahead of the 2026-27 season. Daniel Gafford and Dwight Powell will continue to serve as the main big men for Dallas behind Anthony Davis in Lively's absence.
Bagley was able to play through this issue that he suffered Thursday against the Kings, but he will be held out for the second leg of this back-to-back set. Daniel Gafford and Dwight Powell will likely see higher workloads as a result.
