Morant sustained a UCL sprain in his left elbow in the Jan. 21 game against the Hawks, and while he's expected to make a full recovery, he'll be re-evaluated in approximately three weeks. This means Morant won't return to action until probably after the All-Star break, impacting his potential trade value ahead of the Feb. 5 deadline. With Morant on the sidelines, the Grizzlies should turn to Cam Spencer and Vince Williams, although Ty Jerome (calf) should also see minutes at the point once he's fully healthy and ready to play.
Aldama will be sidelined for a second straight contest. The Grizzlies won't be playing for much down the stretch as they focus on their rebuild, so it will be interesting to see if maintenance days become a common theme.
Out
B. Clarke
Based on this timetable, a return right after the All-Star break could potentially be on the table for Clarke. The forward has appeared in just two games this season, as he was dealing with a knee issue prior to his latest calf injury.
After Edey initially sustained the injury Dec. 11, the Grizzlies relayed that the second-year center would be shut down for at least four weeks before being re-evaluated. Despite having spent the past month rehabbing the injury, Edey seemingly hasn't taken any major steps forward in his recovery and will now need another six weeks to let his ankle heal up. As a result of this latest update, Edey appears unlikely to be ready to return to game action until at least early March, making it tough to justify rostering him in most redraft formats. With Brandon Clarke (calf) also facing a long-term absence, Jock Landale should continue to hold down the fort as the Grizzlies' starting center.
As expected, Coward will miss the second leg of this back-to-back set due to right shoulder soreness, and his next opportunity to play will come Monday against the Warriors. The Grizzlies will be extremely shorthanded in the backcourt Saturday, so Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Walter Clayton and Jahmai Mashack will likely see increased playing time.
Spencer will miss the tail end of the Grizzlies' back-to-back set due to a sore right ankle. The 25-year-old's absence could mean more opportunities for Walter Clayton, Jahmai Mashack or Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Spencer's next chance to play will come Monday at Golden State.
Pippen made his regular-season debut in Friday's loss to the Trail Blazers but will sit out the second leg of this back-to-back due to left great toe injury management. His next opportunity to play will come Monday against Golden State. The Grizzlies are expected to be extremely shorthanded in the backcourt Saturday, leaving more minutes available for the likes of Javon Small, Walter Clayton, Jahmai Mashack and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
Wells will miss his first game of the season Saturday, and he's one of several key contributors to sit out the tail end of the team's back-to-back set. Kentavioius Caldwell-Pope, Walter Clayton and Jahmai Mashack should all see significant run Saturday. Wells' next chance to play will come Monday at Golden State.
