After months of speculation, the Mavericks will pivot away from Davis and will go all-in on a rebuild. Davis is extension eligible, and given the draft capital moved by the Wizards, it seems likely the franchise is looking to keep him for the long term. Plus, this will give Trae Young (knee) someone else to operate in the pick-and-roll with down the road. As for the immediate fantasy impact, Davis is still sidelined by a finger injury and is not expected to be re-evaluated until early March, and the Wizards will almost certainly be out of the playoff hunt by then.
Irving is still working his way through the rehab process for a torn ACL in his left knee, which he had surgically repaired March 26. While he said that Irving had "no timeline" for a return, Kidd didn't provide many details regarding where the veteran point guard stands in his recovery beyond relaying that he's "in good spirits" and "feels great." Kidd also added that the 19-30 Mavericks' position in the standings won't dictate Irving's timeline for a return, instead noting that Irving will be back in action once he's physically and mentally ready. If Irving is able to make a late-season return, he'll likely be subject to heavy restrictions with his minutes, and his presence would presumably result in star rookie Cooper Flagg seeing more time off the ball.
Washington will miss a second consecutive game while in the league's concussion protocol, and his next opportunity to play is in Saturday's rematch against San Antonio. Caleb Martin and Klay Thompson should continue to operate in expanded roles for as long as Washington is sidelined.
The trade sending Hardy to Washington has not yet been finalized, so Hardy won't be available for Thursday's game. He'll likely make his Wizards' debut Saturday in Brooklyn.
Out
D. Russell
Russell was traded from the Mavs to the Wizards on Wednesday, and the trade isn't yet official. He'll need to wait at least until Saturday against Brooklyn to make his Washington debut.
Lively sought out multiple opinions on his right foot, but it was ultimately determined that season-ending surgery was the best course of action for the third-year center, and he's expected to make a full recovery ahead of the 2026-27 season. Daniel Gafford and Dwight Powell will continue to serve as the main big men for Dallas behind Anthony Davis in Lively's absence.
Out For Season
D. Exum
Exum is out for the campaign after undergoing season-ending knee surgery back in November. Essentially, he was thrown in for salary-matching purposes. Exum will be a free agent this coming offseason.
Williams is in line for a second consecutive absence due to a lower leg bruise. Klay Thompson and Miles Kelly will presumably be asked to step up in Williams' place Thursday night.
