Early indications were that Davis would go under the knife and miss multiple months. However, a second opinion was enough to convince Davis to rehab without a procedure. Still, he'll be sidelined for at least six weeks. meaning he likely won't be back until at least early March. Daniel Gafford, Dwight Powell and Moussa Cisse will handle center duties while Davis is sidelined.
Irving is still working his way through the rehab process for a torn ACL in his left knee, which he had surgically repaired March 26. While he said that Irving had "no timeline" for a return, Kidd didn't provide many details regarding where the veteran point guard stands in his recovery beyond relaying that he's "in good spirits" and "feels great." Kidd also added that the 19-30 Mavericks' position in the standings won't dictate Irving's timeline for a return, instead noting that Irving will be back in action once he's physically and mentally ready. If Irving is able to make a late-season return, he'll likely be subject to heavy restrictions with his minutes, and his presence would presumably result in star rookie Cooper Flagg seeing more time off the ball.
Washington suffered a head contusion during Saturday's matchup with the Rockets, and he's since been downgraded to out for Tuesday while in the league's concussion protocol. Caleb Martin and Klay Thompson should see an increase in chances in Washington's absence. His next chance to return will arrive Thursday against the Spurs.
Out
D. Russell
Russell has been downgraded to out after falling ill. His absence shouldn't have much of an impact on the Mavericks' rotation Tuesday evening.
Lively sought out multiple opinions on his right foot, but it was ultimately determined that season-ending surgery was the best course of action for the third-year center, and he's expected to make a full recovery ahead of the 2026-27 season. Daniel Gafford and Dwight Powell will continue to serve as the main big men for Dallas behind Anthony Davis in Lively's absence.
Out For Season
D. Exum
Exum needs a follow-up procedure after dealing with complications from offseason right knee surgery, which will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the year. The veteran guard will be an unrestricted free agent next summer. Until Kyrie Irving (knee) is cleared to play, D'Angelo Russell and Brandon Williams should continue to share the minutes at point guard.
As expected, Williams will miss his first game since Jan. 12 due to a lower right leg contusion. Jaden Hardy and Ryan Nembhard are candidates for increased playing time due to Williams being sidelined. His next opportunity to play will come Thursday against the Spurs.
